Direct answer
No. ESR must suit the circuit and be compared at defined test conditions. Review regulator stability, ripple-current heating, impedance across the relevant frequencies and temperature. A lower catalog value is not, by itself, an engineering approval for a replacement.
Why this issue arises
ESR is one contributor to capacitor impedance, while the circuit responds across a frequency range. Datasheet maximums, typical curves and measurements under different conditions are not interchangeable. Procurement comparisons can hide these differences if the measurement frequency and temperature are omitted from the comparison matrix.
Practical review checklist
Preserve the measurement conditions
Record ESR value, whether it is typical or a maximum, measurement frequency, temperature and applicable document revision.
Check regulator compatibility
Review the power-controller requirements for output capacitance and ESR. Obtain an engineering assessment of loop stability for a proposed change.
Review ripple and thermal conditions
Determine the expected RMS ripple spectrum and local temperature; compare with the manufacturer’s applicable current and thermal limits.
Check the complete impedance behavior
Where relevant, use manufacturer curves or models and consider layout parasitics. A single ESR number does not describe every transient.
Validate the candidate
Include start-up, load steps and thermal behavior in the customer’s test plan; record the approved MPN and remaining limits.
Treat leakage separately from ESR
Compare the manufacturer’s DC leakage limit, applied voltage, temperature and measurement time. A lower ESR does not establish a lower leakage current; evaluate standby-power and high-impedance circuit requirements independently.
Illustrative example — not a customer case
If one offer states “70 mΩ” and another lists an ESR value without conditions, request the missing measurement basis before comparing them. Do not rank the second offer using an assumed frequency.
Technical boundaries
This guide provides no ripple-current rating or regulator-stability guarantee. A simple heating estimate does not replace a manufacturer thermal limit, frequency-dependent evaluation or board testing. Typical curves are not guaranteed maxima.
How TantalumCore can support
TantalumCore can organize ESR and packaging data from manufacturer references and flag missing conditions. Circuit modeling, acceptance limits and validation remain with customer engineering.
