Direct answer
Not from capacitance and voltage alone. Compare the exact parts and the circuit requirements, including ESR, leakage, ripple current, temperature, derating, package and qualification. A technology change is an engineering change even when nominal capacitance and rated voltage match.
Why this issue arises
The cathode systems differ, and their product families can have different electrical behavior and application limits. Lower ESR may be useful, but a regulator may require a particular output-capacitor characteristic. Changing the capacitor can therefore require stability, start-up and thermal validation rather than a purchasing-only substitution.
Practical review checklist
Identify both complete MPNs
Use the source and candidate datasheets. Confirm electrolyte technology, series and full ordering suffix.
Compare under matching conditions
Check ESR frequency and temperature, capacitance tolerance, leakage and permissible ripple-current conditions. Do not compare unqualified headline values.
Review circuit requirements
Check the regulator documentation, rail waveform, start-up behavior, transient loading and any reverse-voltage exposure.
Apply the correct limits
Use each manufacturer’s series-specific voltage and temperature guidance. Do not transfer an MnO₂ rule to a polymer family automatically.
Confirm mechanical and release requirements
Compare case height, land pattern, polarity, reflow guidance and required qualifications; obtain written engineering approval.
Illustrative example — not a customer case
The catalog’s T520 and TAJ examples demonstrate different technical references. They are not a recommended substitution pair. Matching a few listed values would not establish compatibility.
Technical boundaries
This comparison does not select a universally superior technology or establish safe operating limits. A supplier cross-reference cannot replace application testing. Reliability claims need the exact grade and documented operating conditions.
How TantalumCore can support
TantalumCore can collect manufacturer references and organize a candidate comparison. Customer engineering determines suitability and any sample or production validation required.
